Does Social Media Drive You Crazy?

Do you sometimes let it put you in a bad mood for hours at a time? Or send your mind into a loop of negative possibilities that you just can’t turn off?

Well, yesterday, my newsfeed seemed FULL of things that I found unacceptable!  I let it get to me – BIG TIME.

Perhaps I was overreacting because of the sinus headache I had. Thankfully, a few years ago I’d gotten rid of my near constant stress headaches  (that’s a story in itself) so when I get a sinus headache I REALLY notice it.

Or – Perhaps I was just focusing on the “dumbing down”, as I saw it, of the world.

Either way, I let it get to me…

The dark side of social media is that, within seconds, anything can be blown out of proportion and taken out of context. And it’s very difficult not to get swept up in it all.

Let me ask you – what do you do when you are triggered by things you find unacceptable?

Are you able to “turn it off?” or do you go further down into depression, despair or anger?

Me?  Yesterday, in spite of my commitment to “stay as positive as possible” on social media, I liked and even responded to a couple of these posts!

Then I felt the “momentum” of my inner rage building and I did the unthinkable… I walked away from social media for most of the day. I took a nap!

Today I’m back on track, and in my morning reading I came across this story: (Isn’t that how it always works?

Einstein was once asked “What is the most important question in the world?”

He replied “the most important question that any person can ask is whether or not the universe is a friendly place. Because the answer we find determines what we do with our lives.

If the universe is a friendly place, we will spend our time building bridges.

Otherwise people use all their time to build walls.

We decide.”

As Gru in ‘Despicable Me’ said  —-

“LIGHTBULB”

Yesterday I was choosing to see the world as a scary place.

And you know, once you make a decision the universe conspires to bring you evidence of its truth.

The funny thing is, if I decided that these posts were offhand “crazy things” and the world was safe, I could have scrolled through the rest of my news feed and not even noticed the other “crazy” things posted.

But no, not the head-achy me! I was feeling physically “unsafe” and, as a result,  I was subconsciously connecting with things that matched how I felt!

So instead of just having my sinus headache I decided to layer on some attitude.  BAD attitude.

And, of course, the universe complied.

Today – I’m going to view my social media feed in search of the GOOD, the POSITIVE…..

Everything you see or hear or experience in any way at all is specific to you. You create a universe by perceiving it, so everything in the universe you perceive is specific to you.

DOUGLAS ADAMS

So, what can you do if you sometimes get caught in social medias negative snares?

Be proactive. Make the choice on what you will “accept in”. Where possible, create filters that sift out the negativity BEFORE you have a chance to see it!

You can “Unfollow” a Facebook friend – you’ll still be “friends” but won’t get those aggravating “Shares” they send out.

Did You Know:

That you can “not allow” shares from specific “pages” even if you want to continue following a friend who likes to share them. (Email me if you need help with this)

Remember – It’s not in your best interest to try to enlighten, change or modify others. Instead of pushing against, simply step away.

Don’t focus on the walls others are building.

If you’re like me, you’ve got MUCH better things to do with your time.

You’re building bridges….
