Black Belt Goal Setting

As I watched my son’s best friend earn his black belt on Saturday, I was reminded of what an accomplishment it is.

Memories of my own black belt exam flooded my brain. They felt so real that the adrenaline coursed through my veins. Every cell in my body felt alive and awake! As his friend did a technique, I could feel myself doing the same things at my test.

And then I realized how many valuable life lessons there are in getting a black belt.

The biggest one, came with the course of study itself.

My journey to a black belt was broken down in to 10 steps (or belts).

The key to our success – we were not told ALL that we needed to do to earn a black belt. If we were, we’d become paralyzed with doubt and fear about our ability to do it.

You see, if someone told me, the day I signed  my contract to begin my journey to black belt, that I needed to run 3 miles in under 24 minutes, perform in a two day examination (6 hours each day), teach  x number of classes, and all the other things that we needed, I would have immediately become stuck.

Shut down.

Unable to move forward.

So I ask you, consider this –

Where in your life are you afraid to move forward?

Are you letting the “big picture” create doubt and fear?

How would your journey change if you focused on the “next step” instead of the whole process?

Who is the person you need to be in order to achieve your dream?

What steps do you need to take in order to become them?

Often it’s easier to focus only on the next step, and then the next… until you reach your goal.

No one wakes up a PHD, or a Dr or engineer.  No one wakes up with their own, built from scratch, successful business or career.

Think about your goal…. and decide what is the next, simple, action step you can take to reach it?  Once you’ve completed that step, ask yourself, again, what is the next step. Focus on the short term action and you’ll find sooner, rather than later, your goal is achieved!
